I play dozens of weddings each year, but only a very few "first dance" selections. This weekend I have to do Marc Cohen's "True Companion, and it got me wondering .... what are some of the most recent songs that you get requested for as a bridal dance?
Here are some of the most popular in these parts:
I found someone (Streisand / Adams)
I swear (John Michael Montgomery)
Power of love (Celine Dion)
She (Elvis Costello)
The way you look tonite (Bennett version)
True Companion (Cohen)
Here & Now (Luther - not as much lately)
.... there are many more, but I'd love a few new suggestions for my brides that can't concentrate !

Went to an acquaintence's wedding. First dance's song: Have I told You lately that I love you. (Jazz style- one female with that low/jazzy kinda voice accompanied by a three piece band, or you can do it van morrison/Rod Stewart's style).

UD,

One that I tend to suggest is "Love Of My Life", by Jim Brickman. It's actually sung by Michael W. Smith. It's a beautiful song, and the lyrics are very appropriate.

"From This Moment" - Shania Twain - .....
Also, two recent couples asked for "I Will Be Here" by Stephen Curtis Chapman, which is found under 'Christian Music' ...

Two of the more curious requests I've had through the years were "An Affair to Remember" and "The Second Time Around" ...

Uncle Dave: "The Way You Look Tonight" (Sinatra version ) was the first dance for me and my wife in '63, and in '96 my son and daughter-in-law picked it for themselves without knowing that we had used it...

Dnj .... How old are your bridal couples??? Not that those tunes aren't great, but have any of them heard those songs?

I hear ya Tony.....

Also these younger couples want to hear the "EXACT" song they hear on the radio or CD's, which means something special to them, Not a cover done by a live player most of the time.
Sometimes your better off just playing the CD/Mp3 of the Wedding song.

I believe there is a tune called "I like my women a little trashy" or something like that.

"My One And Only Love" Johnny Hartman, Nancy Wilson, Sting, Sinatra, John Coltrane. One of the prettiest top 5 tunes of all time.

You'll have to work at this one a bit, but it's sure to be pretty with you singing it Dave.

If you know it already let us know.

Speaking of Jim Brinkman-

You are my destiny.

The Prayer- Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli- Nice song also but I don't think its the first dance kinda song.

.. it wouldn't be the first time, or the last, especially if it's something obscure, or a tune that's going to last about as long as the recording takes to play ... ...

I have also had a couple of requests for Edwin McCain's "I Could Not Ask for More" ... and last night I started working on Lonestar's "Amazed By You" after hearing Angelo (cam8neel) sing it on Friday nite...
(I'm not too old to learn, Ang)

When I first started in this business MANY decades ago, Because of You, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Always, were still very popular wedding songs ... but once "More" won the Oscar in '63, I would have to say that was THE most popular request for the next 20 years or so....

Tony,

As an Entertainer Sometimes it's the best way to go ....why practice for days just one tune you will only play for 2 minutes "First Dance" if you dont have it in your repetoir.
Just play the original CD/Mp3...
Your Happy and the Wedding Couple is Happy.

Hi Guys.

Over here in Ireland we just ask them what they want. It’s the easy way out I know, but at least if someone disagrees with it, you can say… HEY don’t blame me, I didn’t pick the song. The bride and groom did.

That shuts them up 100% ever time.

Anyway….one of the most asked for song as a first dance here is “Everything I do” by Brian Adams.

Bye.
James.

I stopped doing weddings exactly one year ago--too much indecission. For the first dance, Unchained Melody was always popular, followed by: The Way you Look To Me Tonight, Rod Stewart's Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, Wind Beneath My Wings, and lots of other similar songs.
